SEEFAS Member Update - Lake Reopening's
Dear Members,
As you are all aware due to the exceptionally dry and hot weather we have experienced this year it became necessary to close our lakes to protect both the welfare of our fish and the safety of our members.
The prolonged dry conditions placed additional stress on the fish and in some areas the low water levels made it difficult, and in some cases impossible to safely land fish.
Throughout this period the Committee has been working tirelessly to monitor and protect our waters. This has included daily water chemistry and dissolved oxygen checks additional meetings, and ongoing discussions regarding both short and long term measures to improve the fishery and make it more resilient during future periods of dry weather.
As part of this work Rick, David and Andy have been working on pumping water from Middlemead into Loftmans 1 and the Bird Sanctuary. This has successfully raised the water levels to a safe height without compromising the welfare or safety of the fish at Middlemead.
We are therefore pleased to confirm that from 1 October, the following waters will reopen to members:
• Loftmans 1
• Middlemead – Members Only
• Bird Sanctuary
• Puddle – Pegs 5 to 10 only
Loftmans 2 and Wallasea will remain closed until further notice. We will continue to monitor conditions and will update members when it is considered safe for these waters to reopen.
There will also be a work party at Loftmans 1 on Tuesday 6 October. Any help from members would be greatly appreciated. If you are able to assist please contact Rick to let him know.
We would like to thank all members for their patience, understanding and continued support while these measures have been put in place.
The Committee will continue to monitor water levels and water quality closely, and we will keep members updated should conditions change.
